The Sinking City 2 is a respectable scare fest boasting entertaining puzzle-solving. However, middling combat, flawed progression, and an underwhelming narrative hold it back from reaching the horrific heights of its more celebrated contemporaries.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy executes familiar genre staples and delivers a moving story starring a charismatic pirate on what may be the most impactful and tragic adventure of her life.
Though it is less accessible than other games in the genre, Tactics Ogre
is a surprisingly adult look at war, rebellion, and loyalty with as
much rewarding strategy as any title out there.
The last time I had this much stupid fun blowing things up in a video
game was years ago with Painkiller. My time with Magicka was cut short
before I'd had my fill of its flexible combat system, though, and not
because of any impending deadline.
